John McCall Architects Liverpool Studio

The old coach house at the Arts Village project was in a state of dereliction when we commenced the design for the overall complex. We renovated the building as our Liverpool Office and Studio space, saving it from demolition.

Client: John McCall Architects SAPF

Value: £295,000

Completed: 2004

Location: Ropewalks, Liverpool

A mezzanine floor was inserted into the main open space to link the original hay lofts and to create the first floor design studio. This meant that the steel truss roof and clearstory windows could be upgraded and retained, providing an airy light filled space as the main working environment.

The ground floor accommodation, including the administration office, conference room, kitchen and toilets, all open off the 2 storey entrance atrium which incorporates the staircase leading up to the studio level.

Because the west elevation of the coach house had never been an external wall the Planning Department accepted our proposal to insert large window openings into this elevation, which give views in and out of the building as well as contributing to the excellent levels of natural light .
