Castlefields Village Square

Demolition and Redevelopment of the 1960s shopping centre

Client: Plus Dane Housing Association

Value: £6.7 million

Completed: 2012

Location: Runcorn, Cheshire

The Village Square is the centre piece of the Castlefields Estate regeneration and master plan and was the last major phase of the 10 year regeneration programme that has seen the creation of over 700 new units.

  • The new  community centre was built to BREEAM Very Good.
  • Shared Busway crossing
  • The creation of  a new Public Square acting as the new focal point of the community
  • 35 Two bedroom apartments and 5 New Retail units

The scheme consists of a main commercial block comprising five retail units with residential units above, an adjacent residential block providing a total of 35, 2 bedroom apartments, a new community centre, and separate PCT health centre all arranged around a new formal public square, in the heart of the Castlefield’s estate. The development is arranged to provide a high quality, contemporary focal point and hub for local residents and the wider community.  The transformation of the space from a dark threatening shopping centre to an open safe and vibrant square is remarkable and has made a massive difference to the community.
