Shallcross Court renovation, Liverpool

A renovated and redeveloped sheltered housing scheme with new communal facilities for Liverpool Mutual Homes.

Client: Liverpool Mutual Homes

Value: £1.3 million

Completed: August 2016

Location: Breckfield Road, Everton

This was formerly an untidy collection of buildings with their backs, fortress-like, on their surroundings overlooking a dark and congested courtyard. The apartments at Shallcross Court now look across a large south-facing communal garden in the centre of the scheme.

The previously separate blocks have been knitted together by internal corridors that connect to a striking main entrance building with a range of facilities for the use of the residents. Framed by mature trees with views out across the main road, the eye-catching new building stands out as a new landmark in the local area.

  • Sheltered Housing renovation completed with the residents remaining on the site.
  • Timber Frame construction uses a light touch approach to existing buildings constructed in notorious ‘no-fines’ concrete.
  • Communal rooms open out onto the south-facing garden.
  • The new focal point for the scheme introduces high quality materials and detailing and establishes a new connection to the local area.
